This project has been made possible through Guild Festival Theatre’s Youth Engagement Scarborough Initiative.
Looking for emerging queer playwrights interested in developing new works alongside community members!
WHO: Seeking queer artists with an interest in writing a new work exploring the idea of Queering History — that could look like adapting a classical work, inserting queer characters into the canon, or telling unheard stories, whether fictional or non-fictional. We are open to a wide range of interpretations of this prompt. No previous playwriting experience necessary! All artists are welcome to apply, we will be prioritizing artists based in Scarborough.
WHEN: Group writing sessions will begin in early December. Participants will also receive a one-on-one session with a dramaturge during this time. In early 2027, we will host a group sharing for the playwrights to present their work to one another. We will later reconvene for an invited reading with performers, which the dramaturge will be present at to give further feedback. The project will culminate in a public reading in March 2027, where participants can work with a director and performers to showcase a segment of their work.
COMPENSATION: Playwrights will receive a $200 honorarium for participation in the program.
WHAT (to expect): The opportunity to create and workshop new works with a community of queer artists, with regular check-ins from the facilitator to offer support in meeting your goals. Participants can also expect a one-on-one session with a dramaturge as well as further feedback after the reading.
If this sounds like something you’d like to be a part of, please fill in this google form by November 12th at 11:59PM. If you have any questions, please reach out to facilitator Demi-Lee Bainbridge at demibainbridge129@proton.me. Successful applicants will hear back by November 18th.
