Education and Outreach Assistant – Opera Atelier 

The Education and Outreach Assistant works closely with the Education and Outreach Manager to provide technical and administrative support to the Education programming and Outreach initiatives and events throughout the year. The Education and Outreach programming for Opera Atelier continues to expand, including programs like Opera Atelier’s Making of an Opera (MOAO) at the Elgin Theatre, in-school workshops, and other outreach events throughout the year.. The position also assists with the outreach to targeted communities, including Blind and Partially Sighted, Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and LGBTQ2+. 

Reports to: Education & Outreach Manager

Direct Reports: N/A

Contract Length: 1 Year, Part-Time (5-10 hours per week; Hours will vary week-to-week based on the events schedule of the department.)

 Compensation: $25/hr

Tasks and Responsibilities 

  • Assist with coordinating and producing Opera Atelier’s student, youth and adult education program, “Making of an Opera” (MOAO)
  • Assist with coordination and execution of education & outreach initiatives and events. 
  • Assist with preparing and managing contracts for all participating Artists. 
  • Assist with maintaining working relationships with teachers in the GTA to solicit support and attendance at MOAO sessions in the fall and spring
  • Assist with writing and maintaining all support materials, letters, permission forms, releases and follow-up surveys as needed
  • Assist with organization and managing student attendance at Opera Atelier Dress Rehearsals
  • Assist with the development of new programs as appropriate
  • Attend all MOAO and other education/outreach programming
  • Liaise with Marketing to promote programming
  • Oversee other outreach programming as required
  • Other duties as required

 

Requirements

  • 1 – 3 years of experience in a professional / educational institution setting in the performing arts. Technical and administrative backgrounds will be considered, but candidates must have a willingness to perform both aspects of this position.
  • Familiarity with performing arts (Voice performance & Opera, Theatre, or Dance) is preferred. 
  • Experience with arts education and proven classroom management skills are highly desirable.
  • Competency in Microsoft Office programs and Google Suite.
  • Detail-oriented and highly organized with the ability to multitask.
  • Strong initiative and self-motivation with excellent problem-solving skills. 
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to be on call during off-peak periods.
  • Calm and collected demeanor even in high pressure situations.
  • A valid class G Ontario Driver’s License is an asset but not required.

Working Conditions
This is a hybrid position, with the opportunity to work remotely at least part of the week. Please note that considerable time is spent at a desk, using a computer terminal. Our office is in a heritage building, and as such faces some accessibility challenges, including at least one staircase without an elevator to access the same floor.
