SYNOPSIS
‘one part bitter’s’ favourite part of the day is when her best friend, ‘one part sweet’, comes over after school to swim. but when her mom passes away and she has to move out of her childhood home, everything in ‘one part bitter’s’ life changes as she and ‘one part sweet’ are left to deal with the consequences of her dad’s grief.

AUDITION DETAILS
As the 2024 U of T Hart House Theatre Playwriting Competition winner, a workshop reading of flip flop will be presented on September 29th 2024 at Hart House. This is a paid, non-union opportunity for actors. The play will be workshopped throughout the rehearsal process, so actors should feel comfortable providing feedback and working with new drafts of the script.

AUDITION TIMELINE
The deadline to submit your audition is July 23rd at 11:59pm. Callbacks will be held in-person on July 28th from 2-5pm in the East Common Room of Hart House, on the first floor. COMMITMENT
Actors should be able to commit to 20 hours of rehearsal between September 15th – 28th. You will be asked to indicate your availability within this timeframe on the audition form.
Actors must be available on September 29th between 5-10pm for the final rehearsal and reading presentation.

RATE OF PAY
$500 honorarium.

CASTING
We are seeking three adult actors to fill the roles “one part bitter”, “one part sweet” and “two parts savory/dad”. Please see the information below to decide whether you’d like to audition for one part bitter or one part sweet. Casting for all roles will be decided based on auditions for these characters.

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS
one part bitter
12 years old. wears a bikini. upper middle class. she thinks she owns the pool because it exists in the building she lives in. asserting, provoking, protecting.
🎵 stranger danger – hemlocke springs.

one part sweet
11 years old. wears a tankini. lower class. her flip flop fell into the crevice of the elevator but she still believes it will come back. fantasizing, worrying, holding.
🎵 popcorn and juice – quinnie.

two parts savory
13 years old. wears a one piece. she’s always going to be better than you at the thing you love.

dad
11+12+13 years old.

CONTENT WARNINGS
depictions of adolescent sexuality, sexual assault against a child, sexual coercion between children, discussions of body hair and fluids, discussions of grief/trauma.

a note on careful presentation of difficult subject matter:
flip flop is meant to occur in a pool, with certain scenes encountered as an audio-play through individual headsets. in a full production, audiences would be able to remove their headphones during difficult subject matter, but this reading will not involve this level of tech or site-specificity. audiences will be free to leave the space at their discretion.

For the first round of auditions, actors will submit a video performing the sides linked below. Sides do not need to be memorized.
