The Musical Stage Company is the largest and leading charitable musical theatre company in Canada. Established in 2004 as Acting Up Stage Company, we strive to make Canada a leader in musical theatre. We incubate new Canadian musicals from development to production, investing in Canadian musical theatre writers and building national and international partnerships. To date, our work has been recognized with 135 Dora Award nominations, 28 Dora Awards and 23 Toronto Theatre Critics’ Awards. 

The Opportunity:

The Musical Stage Company is looking to hire a resourceful Associate Producer who is excited to contribute to our next year of programming. This full-time year-long position combines detailed resourcefulness, on the ground producing, and creative problem solving skills to support the Production & Programming activities activities. 

The primary focus of the opportunity will be directed toward operationalizing and producing MSC’s new musical development workshops and education and mentorship programs, with an eye toward some public programming opportunities when needed.

The successful candidate will have interests that lie in the cross section of producing, artistic producing, arts administration, and artist management. The candidate will have experience in coordinating artists and team members, liaising with performance and rehearsal venues, creating contracts and letters of agreements, liaising with various professional associations (Equity, Toronto Musicians’ Association). They will be creative problem solvers and they will be keen to learn and support a wide array of Producing tasks including budget & contract creation and tracking, production errands, rehearsal hall set up, scheduling, and onsite creative team support. 

Our goal is to crack open hearts through music and storytelling, and this position presents a fantastic opportunity to contribute to a unique performing arts organization that has the potential to redefine how musical theatre is developed in Toronto.

Anticipated Start Date:

1 year full-Time employment contract beginning ASAP 

Working Conditions:

  • This position will work digitally from home, from our office at 401 Richmond St W, as well as on the ground at the various theatre venues and non-traditional events spaces in and around Toronto.
  • Evening and weekend work will be required during busy production and development periods.

Compensation:

$50,000 per annum

Reports to: Co-Executive Director 

Responsibilities: 

The Associate Producer will be responsible for: 

  • Producing and operationalizing all new musical development activities (including but not limited to all new musical development workshops, NoteWorthy Conference and Writers Program, new musical funds and commissions such as the Dan Fund and Creators’ Reserve, etc)
  • Producing and operationaling auditions, casting and other artist development opportunities as required (including Artists Retreats, etc);
  • Producing and operationalizing all education and apprentice programs (including but not limited to One Song Glory, the Apprentice Program; Marquee, etc);
  • Producing, operationalizing and supporting other activities as assigned/as capacity allows
    • Including supporting public mainstage programming, ancillary programming  marketing and fundraising events, etc;
  • On the above projects, producing tasks include but are not limited to the following:
    • Holds the primary relationships with the appropriate professional associations including CAEA, TMA, ACTRA, etc;
    • Facilitates and executes all artist and required vendor agreements, offers and contracts;
    • Managing negotiation processes as required;
    • Co-creates, manages, tracks, and reconciles the project budget set by the organization;
    • Co-creates and manages all scheduling;
    • Oversees the work flow on each project 
    • Serves as the primary liaison for all artists and production staff (and their agents) for matters pertaining to contracts, payments, ticketing, travel and housing;
    • Reviews all venue rental contracts and oversees the relationship with all rehearsal and performance venues, and manages the booking of all rental spaces required;
    • Is the primary day-to-day communicator with any affiliated partner organizations; 
    • Booking and facilitating box office needs if required on a specific project;
    • Distributes scripts, scores and contracts to artists;
    • Acts as production manager, stage manager, and company manager when required; 
    • Manages and coordinates the organization and delivery of various production related materials (music department needs; rehearsal hall supplies; etc);
    • Attends workshops as needed;
    • Ensures organization digital filing is up to date by the close of each project.
    • Running production meetings and post mortems as required;
    • Primary contact for all program and project personnel and participants.
  • Supporting general Producing and Administration activities, such as bookkeeping, budget tracking, inventory tracking, and office supply management as required;
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have:

  • Minimum 3 years of professional experience in Producing, Assistant Producing, Production Managing, or other relevant theatre administrative roles that intersect with artists and/or live productions. 
  • Having a G license / access to a vehicle is not necessary for this role, but is considered an asset.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and clear digital and in-person communication skills.
  • The ability to problem solve, think outside the box,  work with a wide variety of personality types, and see multiple perspectives.
  • The ability to  process large volumes of information and tight timelines in a fast-paced environment.
  • The ability to multi-task and coordinate multiple simultaneous projects as well as respond to quickly changing priorities.
  • The ability to thrive working both independently and as a strong team-player with a “can do” attitude and willingness to be flexible and pitch-in where needed.
  • Personal qualities of integrity, empathy, credibility, sound judgment, and a keen interest in The Musical Stage Company’s mission.
