About the Instructors
Laura Mullin and Chris Tolley are the co-creators and hosts of PlayME, CBC’s award-winning digital theatre podcast that transforms some of Canada’s most celebrated plays into engaging audio dramas. Launched initially as an independent podcast, CBC soon embraced PlayME, and it has since garnered international recognition, including a Gold Medal at the 2020 New York Festivals Radio Awards and a Webby Award Honoree designation. The podcast has brought nearly 60 Canadian plays to listeners worldwide, showcasing the work of 27 Governor General Award-nominated writers and reaching the top ranks on Apple Podcasts.
In addition to PlayME, Mullin and Tolley serve as Co-Artistic Directors of Expect Theatre, a company known for its innovative and multidisciplinary approach to live performance. Their work spans live productions, interactive installations, and digital storytelling, all aimed at creating socially resonant and immersive experiences. Notable productions include the Dora Award-winning Romeo/Juliet REMIXED, which reimagined Shakespeare through contemporary perspectives, and Burusera, which toured 21 cities nationally before being adapted into a CBC Drama TV pilot. They also created the CBC Radio/Podcast drama series Tunnel Runners.
Mullin and Tolley’s commitment to theatre extends to collaboration with established arts institutions, including the National Arts Centre and Tarragon Theatre. They frequently lead university workshops, sharing their insights into digital production and narrative development to inspire emerging talent.
