About Us
Theatre of the Beat (TOTB) is a Canadian touring theatre company working to catalyze conversations on social justice and its intersection with the beliefs of the communities in which we find ourselves.. Over 13 years, through 15 original productions and countless interactive workshops, we’ve been engaging communities across Canada in meaningful dialogue on topics such as gender-based violence, 2SLGBTQIA+ inclusion, mental health, and relationship abuse.
Position Overview
We are seeking Toronto-based workshop facilitators to lead interactive, theatre-based educational workshops for youth and seniors. Our current initiatives primarily include workshops on mental health, consent, and elder abuse prevention. Facilitators will work on a contract basis to deliver workshops throughout 2024-2025.
Key Responsibilities
- Facilitate interactive theatre-based workshops using Forum Theatre and other drama-based techniques
- Create safe and inclusive environments for participants to explore sensitive topics
- Lead creative exercises and discussions around mental health, consent, boundaries, and elder abuse
- Adapt workshop content based on participant needs while maintaining core educational objectives
- Work collaboratively with TOTB’s Education team and community partners
- Complete basic administrative tasks related to workshop delivery
Required Qualifications
- Experience in applied theatre, group facilitation, or drama therapy
- Familiarity with Augusto Boal’s techniques, specifically Forum Theatre
- Demonstrated ability to work with diverse and marginalized populations
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Trauma-informed facilitation skills
- Based in the Greater Toronto Area, with access to reliable transportation for local workshops
- Experience working with youth and/or seniors
Assets/Preferred Qualifications
- Post-secondary or graduate education in Creative Art/ Drama Therapy, Applied Theatre, Education, Social Work, or related field
- Ability to travel within Southern Ontario for additional workshop opportunities
- Bilingual skills (please specify languages)
We Particularly Encourage Applications From
- Individuals aged 55+ (for our seniors’ workshop program)
- People who identify as having had lived experience as marginalized or multiply-marginalized youth (for our youth workshop programming)
Compensation
- $125 per 2-hour workshop & workshop report
- $25/hour for training and preparation
- Travel expenses covered for workshops outside of the GTA
Location
- Primary workshop locations in Toronto
- Optional opportunities for workshops throughout Southern Ontario
- Some virtual workshop opportunities available
Time Commitment
- Contract position (November 2024 – August 2025 with possible extension as bookings come in)
- Flexible scheduling
- Approximately 50 workshops to be delivered across our team of facilitators
- Opportunity for ongoing work based on performance and program needs
