VUKA (meaning “to rise” in Zulu) is the genesis of creation, where stories are shared and truths are told, no matter the circumstances. We are searching for a new cohort of Black early in craft artists/creatives to develop their art making skills and grow their narratives.

VUKA is back, as part of Theatre Passe Muraille’s Black Creation Unit for Early in Craft Artists/Creatives. VUKA was born from my personal journey as a Black, neurodivergent artist, shaped by the struggles I faced in theatre school during the early 2000s. I often felt disconnected, longing not only for creative guidance but also for the freedom to craft on my own terms.

Thanks to Theatre Passe Muraille’s support, VUKA has become a reality. It offers Black creators a space to rise above external expectations and create without constraints. Inspired by African traditional storytelling, VUKA honors oral traditions that preserve our communities’ stories and genealogies. This program empowers Black artists to express their truths unapologetically and explore their cultural roots.

VUKA is a sanctuary for Black-identified artists to come together, tell their stories, and uplift one another. I’m excited to guide this new cohort and witness the powerful narratives that will emerge as we rise together and create with conviction.”
– Tsholo KhalemaVUKA Creator & Facilitator

TPM was delighted to host VUKA over the last two years, resulting in 4 provocative and moving works in progress. We are so happy to commit to another two year process with a new cohort of Black creators. With access to explorations in technique, play development as well as invitations to TPM events, VUKA will be an inspiring space for dialogue and creation.”
– Marjorie Chan, TPM Artistic Director
